Executive Memos:

Turning around your career
by: Maurice L Bonamigo, August 2005

1) Be open

There is a danger in aiming to narrowly in any field. Most of the things that I have done in my career; I never had any intention of doing. But it was a way to get in the door. The purpose is to be willing to take some detours to get where you want to go. Also, you never can tell when one of those detours may prove to be the more interesting road of travel.

2) Stay fresh

Whatever project I’m working on at the moment, whether I’ve done it 5000 times, I always treated it as though it is the first time. I always expect more of myself than someone who is just going through the motions. If you think for one moment that your employers or employees will not take note of that mindset, you’re kidding yourself.

3) Get a life and have a life

It is important that you cultivate outside interests; this will keep you fresh. I know people who have trouble discussing anything but their work. Personally, this does not strike me as a particular healthy way to live. That’s why I say to these people whose life is their work, “get a life”, you just might be happier

4) Forget hype

If you have a project that has become successful, take a deep breath, and think twice before you start to transfer that accomplishment to yourself personally. Being in the spotlight can be a tricky thing. But if you understand that your accomplishment will fade away one day or move on to someone else, you will be much better to cope should that happen.

5) Be kind

Remember this, if you start rooting against someone, karma will show you that the other person will always win. Personally I believe that this is the law of life. Time and time again we have all asked, why has that jerk just received that promotion? Always remember, be good to others, be loyal to your company, and true to yourself, and you will find that justice does prevail!
